1st Ave Machine, Ogilvy, and Domtar

As some of you may know, I was asked by Ogilvy via 1st Ave Machine productions a little while ago to participate in the making of a commercial for Domtar, which is a sustainable paper company. It was an incredible project - I did a large cut-paper piece for them and well as starring in the commercial (which is pretty intense and unique for a freelance illustrator, I think).

So without further ado:

This was an amazing project, and all of the people involved were incredible. The production company was fantastic and accommodating, the set design team (Josephine Shokrian) did an amazing job, Ogilvy was great with feedback and wonderful to chat with, and Domtar was very appreciative of the whole creative process. Also props to LXWXH, the lasercutter we used to create "cooking-style" pieces for the development of the project. And to Melissa Ling for helping me cut a part of it while my wrist rested!

I hope to work with these great people again some time!

Romeo and Juliet and Macbeth

These have been such an interesting experience working on, and an honor to be a part of such wonderful plays! Each book has a lasercut cover with a belly band protecting it, 5 lasercut illustrations with two layers, and about 35 other illustrations in the interior!

Now these are just mock-ups of the final covers for me to post - the type (other than the gorgeous titles) will be slightly different. On that note, Chin-Yee Lai worked on the type for the covers, which I love! Plus they have my name on them!

By the way, major, major props to Victoriya Baskin who is working side-by-side with me to get these turned into the requisite vectors! And to Jane Yoo for helping me with some of the more complicated pieces too!

And one caveat for those of you who click on the links: the information and images displayed are in the process of changing slightly, and being updated!

I've been working really hard on the Shakespeare series and getting a LOT done. But in an effort (a successful effort) to rekindle excitement for doing a lot of work I had to relax a little. By working on something that was fast and fun! (because let's face it, I don't really sleep or relax anyway).

I present to you Cubimals, little toys from Glitch, an MMO that's still in beta (but not for long!):

These are only a few of the whole selection, but these are some of my favorites. I love every cubimal though! And after a couple hours' work, I'm back to work on Shakespeare!

It's been a long time since I've shown any of the work that I've been doing, because 2 of the 4 huge projects I'm working on simultaneously are confidential for the time being, the third isn't done yet, and these were all in the making until about an hour ago. And they're still not glued down completely yet.

But here they are, my three theater posters that I did for Richard Solomon's Breakthrough Contest for new illustrators:

Each of them is 13.5"x20.5". Easily the largest works I've ever done in paper, and including work I did with watercolor too.

I was published again in Elmore Magazine for an article about the general atrocity of covering quality music and turning it into mush and drivel. A topic I feel very strongly about as well. After quite a few thumbnails that I didn't like, I thought about perverting the symbol of His Master's Voice (HMV) and voilà:

This is an orange génoise with a meringue buttercream icing and a strawberry marmalade compote over the top, made in honor of my grandmother, who would have been 81 this week:

It's an incredible program where artists submit work and if it's chosen, a certain percentage of the proceeds go to a charitable organization! I'm posting a few of the experiments I've been doing in vellum, and mylar (for the last one). I'm fascinated by the effect, although I think I much prefer the vellum to the mylar. Especially on the sphinx moth (the pink one). It has a lot of potential in the area of subtlety.

The spot illustration that I did was kind of out of my usual realm of thought, but was so much more interesting of a challenge because of it! In the end, I settle on a treble clef around a cross:

I wanted to switch things up a bit and do something simple. It often starts that way and becomes gradually more complicated. But I've been foolin around with block prints for a little while and wanted to try my hand at characters, as well as printing as a form of illustration. So this is a small series of wild animals interacting with manmade objects. I like how they turned out:

This is the seventh and final portrait of the series. Except for the eighth one that I did, which is also posted here. This is Nicki Minaj, but I'm not a huge fan of how she turned out. I know she's supposed to be plastic and fake, and this portrait reflects that, but I'm still not thrilled by it.

So as a result I tried a new route; a more complicated route. And ended up with Fiona Apple:

A little eerie, but still appropriate. My favorite portrait of the series I think.

Since I make my cards by hand I've decided to name, number and keep track of them. These are 'crocus', number 21; 'jonquil', number 22; and 'hoya', number 19. I have interviews tomorrow so they will be adios.

And this is a woodblock print that I did on the cover of this year's book of to-do lists. The first book anyway. It has nasturtiums which stand for conquest and victory in battle. That's right, those are my New Year's Resolutions.

Okay... it's really indigo and ivory, but I tried. On the advice of a recent friend I decided to do some really simple black and white work to show the graphicness of potentially printing on newsprint.

The most interesting part for me is that one of them is done with indigo paper over the ivory (the kingfisher with the Basquiat crown), and the ivory over the indigo (brewed fresh).

Sketchbook stuff, really.

This is my impression of that gorgeous lunar eclipse, done once in watercolor at the time, and another later with an added corona:

I showed the junco from this page a long time ago and finally finished these birds. It's a junco and a tufted titmouse, since I kept seeing them outside when I was working. I'm still trying to figure out the combination of watercolor and paper. I don't consider this as much of a successful piece as I would like, but I learned a lot from the process, and the painting specifically has given me a lot more confidence in my painting skills. The birds were actually completed before I started the Monarch page and mailer.

Part One of Promised Work

I finally finished one of two sketchbook pages I've been working on (seen below). But then I decided to make it into a mailer, and then decided that the butterflies that I had already completely cut weren't the right color and not as well-designed as I wanted so I completely redid them into the corona that you see now.

I'm trying to incorporate watercolor and flat paper together. In a way, I think it has the potential to blow open a new direction for me. I'd really love to hear what people think, because I've shirked watercolor for too long now, and am interested in whatcha think.

I'm pretty psyched to print these out and send them to clients!

Oh, and I'm a bit disappointed to say that my cover for The Orchard wasn't chosen to be published - they went with a photographic cover instead. Still, a job is a job, and I also got an awesome piece out of it, so I'm not that disappointed.

Sketchbook - Armor

This is another page for the cut-paper part of my sketchbook. It's three irregular incurve chrysanthemums, which are one of my absolute favorite flowers because they're so intricate and huge. I read something funny about chrysanthemums in my research for the right ones - the French bred their mums to have pretty details but in a sensible size, the Japanese bred their mums to have huge blooms with ridiculously gorgeous petals, and the Americans bred small, hardy, easily sellable mums that could ship around the country well.

Clearly we know who I'm favoring the most.

Also, I'm going to be starting work in digital and watercolor again too though, so hopefully I'll have things in that regard to post soon.

So I had a thought: why have a flat background when I could spend hours and hours drawing and cutting a pattern that could only subtly show up in the form of shadows? Good thing I love it and the effect.

This is another mock book cover I put together around the idea that the pomegranate, not the apple, is the universal symbol of sin and temptation, and put the ouroboros in the shape of a lemniscate to solidify the idea of its infinite nature.

So I've posted this in a few pieces, but this is done now. I had to add the mathematical scribbles in the heart. It made me remember how much I enjoyed writing/drawing math notes, and how little of math I actually understood... As soon as we hit logarithms in Pre-Calc, I was down for the count.

Anyway, I'm really happy with the way this turned out. It's been a while since I've done something on the more conceptual side, and I love doing hand-cut type so this was a lot of fun. And finished!

Maritsa and Melissa, thank you so much for your advice on The Sun - I thought about maybe illustrating the seeds and then it led to Fermat's Spiral (a mathematical model of predicting spiral patterns like the seeds in a sunflower) and so I went with that.

The Four Sisters

In a time before North America was pillaged by explorers and settlers, the Native Americans were practicing companion planting - an agricultural practice that utilized the strengths of plants that benefited the surrounding plants. They are known as the Three Sisters - maize, beans, and squash. The maize provided support for the beans to grow up onto, the beans provided nitrogen to the soil, and the squash spread out along the ground blocking sunlight and therefore preventing weeds, as well as retaining moisture locked in the ground. Sometimes a Fourth Sister was planted, one that would attract pollinators. This Sister was often the Rocky Mountain Bee Plant, or sometimes Sunflowers.

I wanted to do a set of stamps about the Four Sisters, because they're an example of coexistence that I find fascinating.

They're all wood cuts (my first ever!). I really like the texture it creates - you can still see the wood grain if you look close.

So I'm in Jim Debarros' Senior Project class which is filled with an almost even amount of Illustrators, Graphic Designers, and Art Direction/Advertising majors. We get grouped in with each of the other major and work on the same projects. This project was for "Love Never Dies", the Broadway sequel to Phantom of the Opera which comes out in about a week. My group gave me a lot of the freedom to do the biggest part of the art which was nice. These are our two posters: The top is the teaser poster, the bottom is the main poster.

I didn't realize that I never posted this. It's a card for hanafuda - Japanese flower cards (hanafuda literally translates to flower cards) which are used for gambling. The cards are broken up into 12 months with a flower as its primary motif (except for a few exceptions), with four cards in each suit. This is the chrysanthemum, in the month of September.

Ronnie told me to do illustrations for Sleeping Beauty, so I'm doing the 1643 original version and it's much darker than the Disney version. This is where the king calls together his astrologers and they prophesy that Talia, the "heroine's" name, will be endangered by flax seed.

I was told that with a little more definition in the hair, this is done. I don't think I agree, but what do you think?

The Snow Man

For Artist's Book had to find a book to "deconstruct" and put back together somehow with only text. I found this book of Wallace Stevens' poetry, which turned out instead to be essays about his poetry. Needless to say, I find the idea of writing about something creative instead of doing something creative foolish. So I ripped out all of the pages and glued words onto 15 sheets of acetate into Stevens' "The Snow Man".

Had to do a project unifying type and visuals on a current topic. I did mine on the plight of Native Americans in the US and how it's a damn shame that said plight is not actually a current topic, disregarding the fact that they are in actuality the first people we raped of their homes, and in many cases forced them into slavery only to build our fortresses and encampments.

We also had to focus on how the binding affects the project itself.

This is how I bound mine:

I wanted something vaguely reminiscent of Indian crafts, but know that nothing I could make could match the real quality of authentic craft. Ironically, while I was sewing this together in public, the project's meaning deepened a little bit. One woman told me it looked like I was doing a Cub Scout project. And then a girl asked me if I was sewing a cell phone holder and how much I could make if I started selling them in a boutique or Etsy. It saddens me that Native American art has been reduced so much, when I have seen so many beautiful pieces that were worked on in the spirit of true craft.

In fact this whole project was a bit sad.

I chose 9 wildflowers native only to North America, and on the back of each one stenciled an honest truth about the Native American state as brought on by white selfishness.

For my Artist's Book class, we had to go to a William Blake exhibit and then base our own artist's book off of his "Songs of Innocence and Experience". This is what I came up with:

The sun and the moon in infinity.

The moon at low tide and high tide.

The sun growing into a sunflower.

I had a really long sad dream last night. But the song I woke up singing in my head was actually integrated in my dream which was very strange.

Ab Psych

I took Abnormal Psychology this first Summer Session, and as you can see below, I clearly learned a lot.

This is where I started to doodle:

And then there's that... a camelgiraffedeer... a deeraffel... a cameeraffe. Yeah. Cameeraffe. With a japa mala of course (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hindu_prayer_beads)

Overall though, it was a pretty interesting class.

two silhouettes.

The Invisible Man. I originally started doing a watercolor painting, but it wasn't really going anywhere interesting, so I made it a silhouette and mounted it on the dark red-brown acrylic (frustrating medium that it is).

Just a "quick" silhouette. No real story, just a bird looking down at a fish looking up.

Silhouettes are definitely a direction I want to move towards, but not necessarily only do.

This was done to illustrate the Waldorf-Astoria heist where a man robbed a jewelry store and shot a retired cop (who survived). I used the gouache resist but the crimson ink crackled off so this is what I was left with:
